DeAngelus Garcia, Jr Interview

Who are you?DeAngelus Garcia, Jr

My name is DeAngelus Garcia, Jr. I am Strong, Empowered and Classy!

What do you do?

I am proprietor and lead writer for CreaturComfort, a lifestyle blogging and PR Writing company interested in meeting the needs of the arts community in Detroit and abroad through the written word.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about Detroit and artistic expression. I’m glad God made me a Detroiter and an artist.

Strength refers to the quality or state of being strong; bodily or muscular power; vigor; mental power, force; moral power, firmness, courage; power by reason of influence, authority, resources, numbers, etc. What makes you strong? Tell us how it strengthens you.

What makes me strong is my relationship with God. I am inquisitive and analytical by nature. I always ask why. So far, I have always been able to trace the answer back to God, whether it be in the Bible or through personal revelation, and what he has told me about myself and his plans for my life. Excellent business partner. God is also the reason that I have such an awesome family and extended family as a support system. The way he manifests his love for me through the people around me is dope! To say the least.

Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender, or economic strength of individuals and communities. Where does your sense of empowerment derive from?

I get that it’s a very redundant answer, but God. I am empowered especially as an artist, as a creator because He is a creator. I am already made in his image but to extend it even further, he gave me his trade. Even down to the exact method, because in the beginning there was the word. The fact that I can literally manifest things by speaking them and writing them into existence is testament to his existence for me. Other areas that it influences my life is that I’m not confined to creating dormant and inanimate things but I can create a better life for black people, Detroiters, other believers, etc through my words and actions. It’s like having a super power.

Classy refers to being elegant, stylish; having or reflecting high standards of personal behavior; admirably skillful and graceful. How important is it to maintain a sense of class in your life or field?

It is especially important for me to maintain a sense of class in my life because it reminds me that I have a certain standard. I grew up in the lower-middle class and my parents always made sure our house looked nice and that we represented well when we were out in the world, but there were still drugs and violence and apathy on the other side of the door. It would have been very easy for me to fall into that kind of lifestyle and not excel, if I decided that’s what I would do. Maintaining class reminds me that its okay to have standards and expectations of yourself and those around you. How it relates to my field is there are so many people who want an office or a title without the work. Everybody is a writer, singer, rapper, blogger but how many of them really know what that means? I feel like, remaining classy by meeting deadlines, finding a personal connection in the work I’m delivering and just being sincere is what sets me apart.

Life is truly a journey. Are you proud of where and who you are right now? Why?

I am proud of where I am and who I am. I am proud of where I am because, like I said earlier, I could have ended up anywhere if I’d made the decision to not be successful or hadn’t defined success for myself. I’m especially proud now because having a definition of success and deciding to pursue it is especially important when you are headed towards your dream. Especially when it comes to art. It’s the only profession that you’ll ever hear someone suggest a backup plan for. Being where I am and who I am and having the ability to be proud of it took A LOT of trial and error. I used to be overly concerned with how things looked. There was a time in my life when I wasn’t able to provide for myself and was careless, jobless, damn near homeless. Even earlier in my life, there was a history of several types of abuse that I either witnessed or was a victim of. There were times when I hated my life and myself because of the process that I had to go through to get where I am and there’s still a lot of road ahead of me. I feel like I’m better equipped now mentally and spiritually with a resolve to get things done no matter what.

If you had the opportunity to speak for the masses, what would you say?

If I had an opportunity to speak for the masses, I would say just do it. Don’t be too concerned with how it looks at any point (beginning, middle, end) because you really have no way of knowing. Don’t be scared to achieve. Don’t listen to the people around you if they aren’t supportive. Find people who will support you and tell you the truth in love and will help you find a better way. If you aren’t already blessed with this mind set and with the necessary support system then pray for it. Then, just do it.
