Marcus Burrell Interview

Marcus Burrell

Who are you?

MB: My name is Marcus Burrell and I am Strong, Empowered, and Classy.

What do you do?

MB: I am the Chief Operating Officer of InTheBlack.org, a daily deal company focused on helping the community one business at a time.

What are you passionate about?

MB: My passion is business and helping people. Real simple. I own 6 successful businesses. Started my first business almost 20 years ago. My businesses range from B2B services to consumer products and real estate. My entrepreneurial spirit combined with my giving nature led to the creation of my latest project, InTheBlack.org. We focus on providing the resources businesses need to reach sustainable growth. We’ve partnered with the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce on this project so together we can help these businesses reach their true potential.

Faith. Passion. Will to Win. Focus. Drive. Purpose. These personal characteristics combined with a strong support system keep me strong – mentally, physically, and spiritually. Mental strength allows me to focus until a task is done, whether the task takes a day or years. Physically I’m strong and healthy, and this allows me to work harder and longer. I’m known for my 20-hour days, rising early and working late. And spiritually, I stay prayed up at all times. My Lord and Savior gives me the strength to accomplish all things through Him. I consider my life well rounded. Not perfect, but a great way to live.

Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender, or economic strength of individuals and communities. Where does your sense of empowerment derive from?

MB: I focus on economic empowerment. I remember saying in job interviews, “I just want to help people. Financial woes are often hardest to bear and I just want see people experience joy without having to worry about money.” Before becoming a full time business owner, the activities that kept me busy resonated around this belief. I started an investment club in college, conducted financial seminars while still in undergrad, and have spoke on financial prosperity to adults and students all across the country. I believe in the obtainment of knowledge and the application of what’s learned. Becoming wealthy and creating a successful business – these are reachable goals, and I am determined to not only help people realize this but get them to a place of wealth and success. InTheBlack.org is a big part of this.

Classy refers to being elegant, stylish; having or reflecting high standards of personal behavior; admirably skillful and graceful. How important is it to maintain a sense of class in your life or field?

MB: I’m big on branding. As I always explain to my clients, branding is more than a logo or a nice letterhead. A brand is created via every interaction your business has with their customer, whether face-to-face or not. With the launch of our new project, InTheBlack.org, I have definitely kept this in mind. If you see me out, I’m either proudly sporting InTheBlack.org attire or some casual wear that exudes confidence and professionalism. And the look is always coupled with an inner class that is displayed in my mannerisms and actions. InTheBlack.org is about achievement, success, break-through, and growth, and when businesses work with my company, I have to be all of these things the second they meet me. There are a lot of important components in business, but one of the most important items will always be the impression you leave on the public. I just decided to keep it classy.

Life is truly a journey. Are you proud of where and who you are right now? Why?

MB: I have to say I’m blessed. God has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. I honestly have no regrets and no complaints. I am very accomplished. I have a lot going on – newly married, running businesses, helping communities, traveling, learning, growing. Just really enjoying life. I couldn’t have hoped for a better position in life.

AllINeedIsOneMic.com is a company that may also feature the Jane Thang Productions, LLC’s Strong, Empowered and Classy Project highlights. The premise of this site refers to needing that one opportunity to present your talent and shine. If you had the opportunity to speak for the masses, what would you say?

MB: “Believe. Believe deep inside that all things are possible. Have faith. Because at times, this may be all you have. Faith and belief – these things don’t make life easy, but they can and will make all things possible. Stay positive no matter what. Never let doubt creep into your mind. Through all things stay focused on your goal and your purpose. Things take time, so don’t look for instant gratification. You never know when you’ve made it until you’re there so you just have to keep going. Never stop. Stay driven.” ~ Marcus
