Who are you?

SS: I am Shanara Sanders but call me “The MouthPeace”! I am Strong, Empowered, and Classy.

What do you do?

SS: I am a poetemcee (combination of spoken word poet/lyricist/vocalist). I’m also a radio host for my show “A Word with The MouthPeace” on www.windycityunderground.com.  I am sole owner of MouthPeace Entertainment.

What are you passionate about?

SS: I’m passionate about being a great entertainer of integrity, responsible with my artistry.  I want my craft to have integrity, as it pertains to my Christian faith.

Strength refers to the quality or state of being strong; bodily or muscular power; vigor; mental power, force; moral power, firmness, courage; power by reason of influence, authority, resources, numbers,
etc. What makes you strong? Tell us how it strengthens you.

SS: God’s supernatural power envelops and sustains me.  It gives me power to do what I cannot do myself.  It gives me power to accomplish His Will.  It gave me the title for my upcoming album, “The Discipline & The Diligence” (D&D).  The journey of D&D is a testament to that God Power within me that triumphs over distractions and obstacles that seek to take me off course.  This power, gives me the stamina to train for my first half marathon, attend grad school and complete this album by 10/12/12.

Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender, or economic strength of individuals and communities. Where does your sense of empowerment derive from?

SS: I am blessed in many ways but my central source of empowerment comes from my faith community.  I have a strong tie to my church home, Trinity United Church of Christ.  I met them at a critical time, when I was just a 20 year old college junior.  They helped me to understand who I was as a Black woman in America and in Christ.  I am also fortified in my artistry there.  My pastor and first lady are models of divine imagination.  I am often called to utilize my gifts for various occasions/events.  I am finishing my second term as the chairperson of the Adult Drama ministry.  Through this position, as well as my ongoing mentoring with young women, I am able to impart wisdom from my experience so that they can walk out their God purpose with authority.

Classy refers to being elegant, stylish; having or reflecting high standards of personal behavior; admirably skillful and graceful. How important is it to maintain a sense of class in your life or field?

SS: It is super important to remain classy in my field because unfortunately, there is this misconception that you have to ‘act like a man and think like a man”, to survive a man’s world or the male-dominated entertainment business.  Well, I say, “act like a God/Goddess, think like a God/Goddess”!  After all He/She created wo/mankind, so that’s the best strategy you could ever have.

Life is truly a journey. Are you proud of where and who you are right now? Why?

SS: I am definitely proud of who I’ve become despite all odds: first born of 3 children to a teenage mother and a domestic violence survivor.  I am happily single, homeowner, world-traveled, current graduate student and pursuing my dream of being a full time entertainer/songwriter.  I have peace of mind and plenty of joy and love to spread everywhere I go.  I am living life like it’s golden:-)
